When children are involved in a family mediation, they are the focus. At Heft Law, when
children are involved, we take a strong child focussed approach. Most legal issues flow from
what happens to the children and what is in their best interests.
It is important to recognize that in family mediation, the children’s views and preferences are
respected.
At Heft Law, the children’s views and preferences can be addressed in a number of ways
including: having the children meet with a professional and the professional report back; a
jointly retained assessor; counselling for the children, in some cases, the Office of the Children’s
Lawyer.
Mediation permits the parties to use creative and family specific ways to seek and share
information about the children and what is in the children’s best interests.
